Kathmandu, Nepal - September 17, 2023
A gathering of conservation biologists and research experts recently convened in Kathmandu, to engage in a crucial dialogue about the state of research in Nepal. The meeting aimed to shed light on the challenges faced by the research community and explore potential solutions to enhance the research landscape in the country.
During the discussions, participants expressed concerns about the lack of specialized research facilities in Nepal. It was noted that the absence of such facilities hampers the ability of researchers to conduct high-quality studies. Many participants emphasized the urgent need for an institution to support researchers to carry out their work effectively.
Furthermore, the meeting highlighted that much of the research conducted in Nepal is at an individual level. A significant portion of the research, including much of research by foreign researchers is assisted by tour operators. This dependence on tour operators for research shows the need of such facilities.
One prominent expert, speaking during the meeting, expressed frustration over the lack of a coherent government policy regarding research in Nepal. They emphasized that the government should play a more active role in shaping the research landscape by providing clear guidelines, funding opportunities, and incentives for researchers. This sentiment resonated with many participants who believe that government support is crucial for the growth and development of research in the country. This includes a policy to promote research institutes that cater to research facilities in Nepal
The meeting also witnessed the endorsement of the programmatic focus of the Himbat Institute, an organization dedicated to providing both technical and administrative support for carrying out diverse research in Nepal. The institute's commitment to advancing research aligned with the goals and aspirations of the gathered experts.
As the discussions concluded, S Paudel, the managing director of the Himavat Institute, expressed gratitude on behalf of the participants for the insightful deliberations. Paudel emphasized the importance of collaboration and collective efforts in addressing the challenges facing research in Nepal and committed to working towards a brighter future for research and conservation in the region.
